Tree Health & Hazard Assessment

Not every problem tree needs to come down, and not every healthy-looking tree is safe. PV Tree Service provides on-site tree health and hazard assessments so you can make an informed decision instead of guessing, or instead of taking the word of whoever knocked on your door after the last storm.

A note on credentials: we are a working tree service with hands-on removal and care experience in this region, not a licensed consulting arborist. For legal proceedings, formal risk-assessment reports, or appraisal work, you want a Massachusetts Certified Arborist, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Signs a tree may be hazardous

  • Large dead limbs high in the canopy, or a canopy that is noticeably thinner than neighboring trees of the same species
  • Mushrooms, conks, or shelf fungus at the base, on roots, or on the trunk, often a sign of internal decay
  • Vertical cracks, seams, or open cavities in the trunk or major limbs
  • A lean that is new or worsening, particularly with cracked or heaving soil on the uphill side
  • Two main stems meeting in a tight V with bark pinched between them, a weak union prone to splitting
  • Bark falling away in sheets, exposing dead wood underneath
  • Recent excavation, trenching, paving, or grade change within the root zone
  • Carpenter ant or borer activity around the base

Local pests and diseases worth knowing about

Emerald ash borer is established in Massachusetts and has been working through Franklin County ash. Ash that dies from EAB becomes brittle unusually fast, which makes dead ash both a higher priority to remove and more dangerous to work on the longer it stands. Spongy moth defoliation, repeated over consecutive seasons, weakens oaks and can push already-stressed trees over the edge. Beech leaf disease is spreading in New England as well.

What an assessment covers

We look at the whole tree and its setting: species and typical failure patterns, canopy condition, trunk and root collar, visible decay, structural defects, lean, root-zone disturbance, and, importantly, what is underneath the tree. A structurally marginal tree in the middle of a field is a very different proposition from the same tree over a bedroom.

You get a straight answer: keep it, prune it, cable and brace it, monitor it, or remove it, and why.

Which trees are most likely to fail here?

Silver maple and willow are the usual answers in the Connecticut River valley, both fast-growing, both prone to weak unions and limb failure at size. Large white pine sheds limbs and tops out in wind. Ash, for the EAB reasons above. None of this means those species must be removed, it means they are worth actually looking at if they are large and near something you care about.
