Erving sits just east of us along the Millers River, and it is one of the towns we cover most regularly. It is small, steep in places, and heavily wooded, which shapes the kind of tree work that comes up here.
Most of Erving’s housing sits in the village along Route 2 and up the side roads, with a lot of property backing directly onto woods. That means whole-tree work rather than street trees: dead pine and ash near houses, storm-damaged hardwood, and driveway clearance on steep, narrow approaches.
The Route 2 corridor and the ground rising toward Erving State Forest bring two specific issues. First, roadside trees along a busy state route are a genuine hazard when they fail, and clearance work there needs proper traffic awareness. Second, the steep ground above the river makes equipment access a real planning question on some properties — we work that out during the estimate rather than discovering it on the day.
Two species dominate the removal work around here. Ash is being worked through by emerald ash borer, and dead ash goes brittle unusually fast, which makes it both a higher priority and more dangerous the longer it stands. Large white pine sheds limbs and tops out in wind, and Erving has a lot of it. If you have either near a house or driveway, it is worth looking at before the next storm rather than after.
Properties near the Millers River, Keyup Brook, or any of the smaller streams may fall within wetland or riverfront buffer, which brings the Conservation Commission into clearing projects under the Wetlands Protection Act. For a single hazard tree this is usually straightforward; for meaningful clearing, start that conversation with the town early.
Trees within the road right-of-way are public shade trees under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87 and need the Tree Warden’s approval, not just yours. On Route 2 and the older village roads this comes up more than people expect. We will tell you which side of the line your tree is on.
