When does a tree need to be removed?

A tree usually needs to come down when it is dead, structurally compromised, or positioned so that failure would damage something valuable. Common reasons we get called:

• Large dead limbs in the upper canopy, or a canopy that leafed out thin or not at all
• Fungus, conks, or mushrooms at the base of the trunk or on major roots, which often indicates internal decay
• Vertical cracks, splits, or seams in the trunk, or a visible cavity
• A lean that is new, worsening, or accompanied by heaving soil on the opposite side
• Root damage from excavation, driveway work, or grade changes
• Trees crowding a house, roof, septic system, driveway, or power drop
• Storm damage that has left the tree split, hung up, or partially uprooted

Silver maple, willow, box elder, and older white pine are the species we most often remove in this area. Silver maple in particular is common along the Connecticut River corridor, grows fast, and is prone to limb failure and included-bark unions as it matures.

How much does tree removal cost?

Price depends on the height and diameter of the tree, its condition, how close it is to structures or utility lines, whether a crane or specialized rigging is required, and how much material has to be hauled off. A 30-foot tree standing alone in an open field is a straightforward job. An 80-foot dead maple leaning over a garage with a power drop underneath is a very different one.

We do not publish a generic price list, because it would be misleading. We give you a firm written estimate after walking the property, and that estimate is what you pay.

What does the process look like?

1. Free on-site estimate. We look at the tree, the access route, and what is underneath it, and talk through your goals.
2. Written agreement. Scope, timeline, and price in writing before anything starts. No long-term contract.
3. Site protection and setup. We plan drop zones, rigging points, and equipment placement to protect lawn, beds, and structures.
4. Removal. Climbed, bucket-truck, or crane-assisted depending on what is safest for that specific tree.
5. Cleanup. Brush and limbs chipped and hauled away, work area raked out.

What happens to the wood?

By default we haul brush, limbs, and debris away as part of the job. Plenty of homes around Northfield and Franklin County heat with wood, so if you would rather keep the trunk for firewood or milling, tell us before we start and we will leave it cut to length on site instead.

Do you grind the stump?

We do not currently offer stump grinding. We will cut the stump low and can point you toward local operators who grind. If stump removal is essential to your project, mention it during the estimate so we can plan the cut height accordingly.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?

Trees entirely on private property generally do not require a state permit. Trees within the public road right-of-way are treated as public shade trees under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87 and require approval from the town Tree Warden, including a public hearing. Trees in wetland or riverfront buffer zones may fall under Conservation Commission review. We will tell you if we think your tree falls into one of those categories.
